Password Deletion

To delete your password information, find the .PWL file in the Windows directory with your username in it (such as STEVEJ.PWL). Delete it and restart Windows

First Time Password

When Windows asks you for a password when it boots for the first time, just enter your user name and skip entering a password. Then, you'll never be bothered by it again. A password in this box won't protect any of the files on your local machine. It's only useful for logging onto network resources on a LAN.

Getting round the Save password in Dial-Up Networking

In the no-Password mode, the dial-up networking is unable to save the password and remember it. You can get around this by going to settings, control panel and then to passwords. Then, set it so that you can personalise the desktop. Now, when you shut down windows, there will be another option, Log on as another user. In this mode, you will be able to remember Passwords, so the Dial-up networking will be rememberd. Enter your password in and save password. Once it's been saved, go back to Passwords and change the configuration to anyone can use the same settings of the desktop, and don't use any password at all. Windows will now switch back to the normal mode, but somehow, the Dial-up networking save password is unchanged. So, your password is now saved and you won't have to type it in again.

Place ? on start menu

First, open or explore the Start Menu. Then select New/Folder from the File menu. Name the folder exactly as below, including the braces. Or just copy from here and paste into the name space of the new folder.

PowerToys Microsoft Windows 95

Here's what's presently available "Use at your own risk".

SEND TO ANY FOLDER

This utility adds an "Any Folder" entry to your win95 "Send To" menu. You can then right-click on any file or directory, choose "Send To Any Folder" and type an MS-DOS path to move or copy the file into.
High-end users who miss the File Manager's Move and Copy dialogs will love Send To Any Folder.

If you have user profiles set up on your computer and would like separate SendTo folders for each user, see my Registry section SendTo for each profile.

FAST FOLDER CONTENTS

With this handy-dandy context-menu extension, you can hold down the SHIFT key whenever you right-click on any folder, and you'll get a cascade menu that shows you all the contents of that folder, one-level deep. It works on shortcuts-to-folders, too.

QUICK CD

Quick CD is a taskbar notification icon that makes controlling audio CDs a breeze. When an audio CD is in your drive, Quick CD gives you convenient single-click play/pause control, a tooltip that tells you which track and time you're on, and a right-click menu that provides commands for starting, stopping, and moving around the tracks on your CD.

CABFILE VIEWER

You know those *.CAB files that you'll find on the Win95 CD and floppies? (These are files containing one or more compressed files.) Well, with the CABFILE Viewer shell extension, you can browse right into a CAB file and see all of its contents, and perform normal shell operations like drag/drop, etc. on the files inside.

ROUND CLOCK

This version of CLOCK.EXE takes advantage of win95's region windows, so your analog clock will be round, just like a real clock would. (Note.. you just need to copy this EXE to use the clock. No setup file is provided.)

Tweakui

Tweak UI" allows you to fine-tune ("tweak") the Windows User Interface ("UI"). and is intended for the advanced user.
Changes made in TweakUI change settings in the registry and can affect the behavior and appearance of Windows.
While this provides a greater level of customisation, it also presents a greater risk of making changes that will leave Windows in an unusable state.

It is recommended that you backup you registry before making any changes in TweakUI.
To backup your registry, you can click on Start/Run and type in "Scanregw" (without the quotes).

The Microsoft Windows 95 PowerToys are easy to install, and because they're FREE, they are absolutely worth having on your system. I particularly recommend "Any Folder," "Cabfile Viewer," and "Round Clock" seems to "fit" the Windows 95 Desktop better than it's square Win 3.1 cousin.
